Ni No Kuni is being made into a movie

The JRPG series Ni No Kuni is being made into an animated movie by Level-5, and will release in Japan this summer. It's being directed by Yoshiyuki Momose, who as well as working on both Ni No Kuni games has directed several shorts and commercials for Studio Ghibli. Composer Joe Hisaishi is another familiar name for Ghibli fans, having scored movies including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. It will apparently tell a new story in the Ni No Kuni setting, about a boy named Yu (voiced by Kento

The films of Studio Ghibli are my coping mechanism

These days, I watch the films of Studio Ghibli, director Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved Japanese animation studio, and dissolve into tears. Ensnared in a bathhouse for spirits, the film’s protagonist is miserable: A witch stole her name and cursed food has transformed her parents into pigs. Ghibli films rarely depict a base reality unlike our own. There are no superheroes, only complex characters whose bravery contends with self-doubt, and whose doubt gives way to love, all the time. Horikoshi designe

Getting fired from a Miyazaki movie was ‘a good thing’ for this anime director

The short film Digimon Adventure served to introduce the franchise to audiences, premiering a day prior to the TV anime’s premiere. “When I did the Digimon movie, Ghibli producer [Toshio Suzuki] came to me, saying, ‘We have a feature coming up. Hosoda was asked to direct, a huge get for a director who had previously only directed one feature-length film. “If I had to make Howl’s the way Ghibli wanted me to make it, I think my career would have been over,” he said. Mirai, the latest in his slate

Yoku’s Island Express, the Sonic Spinball meets Studio Ghibli sidescroller, has a release date

I'm draugr-deep in God of War at the moment. And having spent the last few months committing crimes all over Los Santos—I most recently murdered a song—the idea of unwinding with pleasant and colourful games like Yoku's Island Express appeals to me. As we reported earlier this year, Villa Gorilla and Team17's Yoku's Island Express combines platforming with puzzles and pinball in a Sonic Spinball meets Studio Ghibli-type dealio. In doing so, players assume control of the titular dung beetle hero
