Half-Life: Alyx’s release date was announced via Valve’s official Twitter account. The post didn’t provide any further information, but did include a teaser image with the release date written on it. The teaser image shows a figure walking through some ruins that have crumpled to form a lambda-like shape. The figure is presumably Alyx herself, though it’s ambiguous.

In a second post made after the release date announcement, Valve shared three new screenshots from Half-Life: Alyx. The first is from Alyx’s first-person perspective. She’s wielding a pistol with two Combine Overwatch soldier enemies in front of her, along with one of Half-Life’s iconic first-aid stations. The second screenshot shows a sort of Combine nest. There’s a headcrab-ed zombie below and a barnacle enemy hanging from the ceiling. The third screenshot shows a more puzzle-focused area set in a drained waterway.

If Half-Life fans had any questions about what Half-Life: Alyx would really be about, they’ll have to wait. As cool as the new screenshots may be, they don’t reveal any of the game’s secrets. They do appeal a bit to Half-Life fans’ nostalgia, though, which is likely to help with pre-orders.

As for pre-orders, Half-Life: Alyx is currently available to purchase for 10% off its standard $59.99 price. It isn’t clear exactly how long this discount will last, but those hoping to save some money should likely purchase their copy of the game soon. The price will likely rise after launch. Up until launch, Steam users will have free access to all previous Half-Life games.

Half-Life: Alyx is both a continuation of the story from Half-Life and Half-Life 2 while also being something entirely new. The game is set between the events of the two original Half-Life games. It stars Alyx Vance as she helps to lead the resistance against the Combine’s dominance. How the game ties into Half-Life 2 remains to be seen, but is definitely the most exciting part of the game for fans hoping for a further exploration of the game’s incomplete story.
