A rumor regarding Microsoft’s plans for its next-generation Xbox console that appeared to die has resurfaced according to a new report. The rumor states that instead of just a single next-generation console, Microsoft is planning a pair. The first would be a standard next-gen console much like most Xbox fans would expect for a follow-up to the Xbox One X. The second would be a less expensive all-digital version of that next-gen console both with less hardware power and no disc drive.

According to Kotaku, several sources have confirmed that the Lockhart console remains in development and that developers are being briefed about the console’s capabilities. Lockhart’s development was first revealed via leaks going back to 2018, but was believed to be put on ice following E3 after rumors hinted Microsoft was focusing on a one-console next-gen launch. Whether that rumor was true or false at the time remains unclear, but Lockhart itself appears to back in Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox plans.

The reports go even further, detailing certain goals for Microsoft’s next-gen hardware. According to developers who have been briefed regarding Xbox’s plans, Project Scarlett is believed to be targeting a 4K resolution with 60 FPS. Lockhart, on the other hand, would be scaled back from Project Scarlett. It would instead target a 1440p resolution at 60 FPS. One developer apparently described it as similar to the PS4 Pro in terms of raw graphical power, though with next-gen hardware otherwise.

Lockhart’s purpose would be similar to the current Xbox One S All-Digital console, which is to provide a cheaper alternative that focuses on Xbox’s live services. That includes Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass. With the Lockhart, however, Xbox would also tie the console into its upcoming cloud gaming service, xCloud. It could be seen as Xbox’s alternative option for those who aren’t ready to upgrade to 4K monitors or televisions in 2020.

Evidence of the accuracy of these reports will likely go unverified for some time yet. Microsoft intends to launch Project Scarlett and, assumedly, the Lockhart console during holiday 2020. A formal announcement of both consoles, including pricing and specific release plans, may need to wait until E3 in June 2020. Hopefully, more information on both consoles, either officially or through leaks, will be shared before then.
