Activision parted with Destiny 2 because ‘it was not meeting financial expectations’

Activision Blizzard's quarterly earnings call took place today, and during the Q&A session at the end, Activision COO Coddy Johnson was asked for "more color" on parting ways with Bungie and the Destiny franchise. "First, as you know, we didn't own the underlying Destiny IP," Johnson said. "And that leads to probably the second factor in our decision process, which is, Destiny is highly critically acclaimed, high quality content, but it was not meeting our financial expectations." The third reas

This year’s Call of Duty will have an ‘entirely new campaign’

Activision took something of a risk with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 by dropping the single-player campaign in favor of a purely multiplayer experience. It worked out pretty well, but even so the publisher said during today's earnings call that this year's Call of Duty—and yes, there's going to be one—will see the return of a campaign. "It's going to feature an entirely new campaign, a huge and expansive multiplayer world, and of course some fun co-op gameplay," Activision president Rob Kostich sa

Blizzard is hiring more Diablo devs to work on ‘several projects’

Blizzard isn't talking about Diablo 4, but the game sure seems to exist. Diablo Immortal, Blizzard's upcoming mobile game developed in partnership with Netease, is the one confirmed Diablo project we know about. "Several" could mean Diablo 4 and perhaps a Diablo 2 remaster. "Other Warcraft games" could simply be referencing Warcraft 3 Reforged and WoW Classic, or could mean something more. Judging by what Activision said earlier in the earnings call, though, don't expect any big new Blizzard gam

Twitter is mercilessly dunking on Jump Force’s terrible cutscenes

A Jump Force create-a-character from Youtuber Shirrako, of course named Waifu. Footage of the mega manga crossover's story mode has started hitting Youtube and Twitter, and Jump Force is already getting a merciless skewering. Jump Force's chiseled clay aesthetic has been criticized since the game was revealed last year, especially with the gorgeous Dragon Ball FighterZ right there for comparison. The target is firmly planted on the cutscenes in Jump Force's campaign, where characters stand rigid

Activision says Blizzard has no major new games coming in 2019

Its outlook for income in 2019 is lower, and part of that comes from Blizzard, which will apparently not be releasing any new, significant games this year. "Turning to Blizzard, we expect materially lower financial performance this year," Activision said on the call. "2018 benefited from the release of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, whereas we are not planning a major frontline release for 2019." Blizzard apparently finished the last quarter of 2018 with "softness for its in-game revenue
