This week’s highs and lows in PC gaming

It was one of the truly big, unusual things I saw at Gamescom last week, and this week I wrote about it . Tom Senior: Gamescom as you areWe were too busy travelling back from Gamescom to talk about Gamescom last week, so let’s recap some of the really tasty stuff. Looking ahead to next week, I’m preparing to return for my six-monthly dose of Destiny 2 as the massive Forsaken expansion lands on PC. Andy Kelly: Fresh HillSilent Hill 2 is one of my favourite games, lingering somewhere in my persona

Dota 2 Adds NBA Jam Announcer Pack for Maximum Boomshakalaka

Appearing on the Steam Community Workshop now, an announcer voice pack for Dota 2 featuring Kitzrow’s iconic delivery is available to be voted on by Steam users. The pack, entitled “Dota Jam Announcer Pack” features the voice of Kitzrow, delivering some iconic catchphrases and commentary that sounds like it came straight from NBA Jam. In reality, the voice actor recorded brand new lines just for the Dota 2 announcer pack. Long-time fans of Dota 2 likely remember a similar fan-made voice mod that

Fortnite’s storm will damage player-made structures starting in patch 5.40

A new development update posted today (see above) reveals some of the changes coming to Fortnite in patch 5.40. At the top of the order is that, near the end of a match, the edges of the storm will now damage player-built structures. The 5.40 update will also see the revolver sent to the vault "to keep the item pool feeling fresh and dynamic." Finally, the patch will also include balance changes such as increasing the rarity of remote explosives, increasing the stack size of boogie bombs from on

Last Tide is a diving battle royale shooter filled with sharks, now on Steam

The folks at Digital Confectioners took one look at the booming battle royale genre, furrowed their brows, steepled their fingers, and said, "This is great, but it needs more sharks." At least that's how I assume Last Tide was born, an aquatic battle royale shooter set in a shark-filled sea. Last Tide is a fairly faithful battle royale game: 100 players fight to the death within an ever-shrinking circle on a map where some sort of gun fairy just finished sprinkling lethal firearms all over the p

90s vs now: How Back to School supplies have evolved in the last 20 years

Some back to school items have evolved in leaps and bounds since the 90s, while others have become outright relics. Game Boy Pocket vs Nintendo SwitchRemember when the few cellphones you saw had super basic, colorless displays? At least in the 90s electronics were getting smaller, as was so well demonstrated with the Game Boy Pocket. The HD screen has more colors than a Game Boy Pocket or even a Game Boy Color could have dreamt of, and the screen alone is nearly the size of the whole Game Boy Po

24 years later, speedrunner finds ‘the last official secret’ of Doom 2

According to John Romero , Doom speedrunner Zero Master has finally uncovered Doom 2's best-kept secret: a previously inaccessible sector found in the Industrial Zone map designed by Romero himself. This secret has technically been known for some time, but Zero Master was the first to obtain it without using any cheats. As Zero Master explained on YouTube, "a secret can only be triggered if Doomguy's center is within the secret area and if he is on the same height as the secret sector." "This fo

Fortnite Dev Dismisses PS5 Code Name Theory

One such rumor has apparently been squashed by a Fortnite dev, who claims that the PS5 Erebus code name isn’t actually referring to the PlayStation 5 at all. However, Fortnite developer Arjan Brussee spoke up on Twitter, stating that the code name actually referred to the Switch build of Fortnite before it was ready to be revealed. FYI references to 'Erebus' in UE4 code only refer to the codename for the Switch version of @FortniteGame before we announced it. PlayStation fans may have quite a wh

Here’s what’s changing in the Battlefield 5 open beta next week

The Battlefield 5 open beta starts on September 6 for most, and earlier on September 4 for those who subscribe to Origin Access or have pre-ordered the game. The Arctic Fjord map from the closed alpha will be joined by Rotterdam, which we saw at Gamescom. The Fall of Norway Grand Operation available in the beta will include the Airborne mode, which sees one team deploying in a plane and parachuting to the ground. Over on the Battlefield forums, meanwhile, multiplayer producer David Sirland has p

CitizenCon digital ticket plan scrapped following uproar among Star Citizen fans

This year's CitizenCon, the annual convention celebrating all things Star Citizen, was going to be a little different from previous events, because this year Cloud Imperium planned to charge $20 for a "digital ticket" that would grant access to all livestreamed events. Unsurprisingly, that plan, as you can see in this Star Citizen subreddit thread, went over like a lead balloon with a significant number of Star Citizen fans. The uproar was such that Star Citizen head guy Chris Roberts posted a l
