No Man’s Sky: The Biggest Features That Have Changed Since Launch

No Man’s Sky had a pretty rough launch when it first shipped back in 2016, and developer Hello Games took quite a hit from both fans and critics about the ambitious space-adventure game. Many fans dropped the game shortly after launch and never picked it back up, but No Man’s Sky has received many updates since then and may be worth taking another look at, especially after No Man’s Sky’s NEXT update. Here are some of the biggest changes that have come to No Man’s Sky recently.

Big Changes to Planet Exploration

Planet exploration is one of the biggest parts of No Man’s Sky, and many fans weren’t satisfied with how it felt to explore the procedurally generated planets. But since launch, Hello Games has been working to overhaul the planet exploration process, making it easier for players to navigate, mine, and discover new things while looking for resources. The Pathfinder Update added Exocrafts, different types of land-exploration vehicles that have different features and abilities.

Hello Games also added base building, so players could make a home for themselves on whatever planet they chose. Players can combine the base building feature with the terrain editing tools in-game to make the perfect base of operations for space explorers.

Players can also search for crashed freighters on planets, which can hold a nice cache of materials and valuables that can be traded to merchants across the universe. The trading system has also received an overhaul to make it more diverse as players reach new star systems. All of the changes will likely be even more interesting when multiplayer is added in the NEXT update.

Making a Rich Universe

One of the selling points of No Man’s Sky was the vast universe that could be explored extensively. However, space exploration sometimes felt like more of a hassle than a joy. But Hello Games revamped how players will travel and added new ways to pop around the seemingly-infinite universe.

One of the biggest changes, literally, is the addition of freighter ships. Players can acquire these massive vessels and use them as a mobile base of operations wherever they go. If fighting freighters is more their speed, Hello Games also updated the space combat mechanics to make taking on enemies more challenging and fun. It was even enough to bring a large number of players back to the game.

Planet-side, players can find portals that can take them across the universe in the blink of an eye, which may make base-building a lot more fun since players can set up shop near these portals to have multiple bases. Regardless of how players traverse the universe, it will feel richer compared to when the game first launched, since Hello Games updated their generation algorithm to make planets more interesting and aesthetically pleasing.

Creating a Fun Gameplay Experience

All of these changes make the overall No Man’s Sky experience a much more inviting and exciting universe, but Hello Games also added some more gameplay-driven changes to the game to make it even better. The Atlas Rises update reworked the story in-game, and tells a better, more cohesive narrative about the creation of the universe. Alongside this, the game also received new game modes for players to tailor their experience to be exactly how they want it. Players can play creative and just explore, or they could take on the permadeath challenge where they get one shot at life in the dangerous universe.

No Man’s Sky has changed a lot since launch, and it is slowly becoming the game that fans wanted it to be. While No Man’s Sky is certainly an ambitious title, it needed a little more time to fill some of the promises that Hello Games made before launch. With multiplayer and the Xbox One edition launching with the NEXT update, No Man’s Sky can only get better.

No Man’s Sky is available now for PC and PS4 and launches July 24 for Xbox One.
