Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri review: “A fiercely intelligent, profanely poetic movie”

What happens, which won’t be spoiled here, is at once horrifying and mortifying and sad and gory and diabolically funny. But terrific third feature Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a notable leap forward, adding compassion and profundity to the volatile mix. “What’s the law on what ya can and can’t say on a billboard?” she asks. “I assume ya can’t say nothing defamatory, and ya can’t say ‘Fuck’? The only way it could, really – and a way that 99 per cent of Hollywood thrillers would n

Nvidia announces massive gaming displays for the living room

Once you've played games on a 144Hz or higher refresh rate display, going back to 60Hz can be painful. That's Big Format Gaming Display if you're wondering, though we could come up with a few other creative interpretations. Start with a 65-inch 4K panel, but then add in a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR support. If you're looking for a living room upgrade to last the next decade, these could well be the best option. Nvidia didn't reveal pricing or availability, though it's reasonable to assume pricin

Nvidia gets into the TV business with BFGD screens designed for PC gaming

Not one to conform, Nvidia has launched a new initiative to make the best PC gaming screens which it calls Big Format Gaming Displays (or BFGD for short). In collaboration with Acer, Asus and HP, the GPU maker will produce 65-inch, 4K 120Hz HDR displays with integrated Nvidia G-Sync technology and Nvidia Shield functionality. This effectively would make BFGDs the one of the biggest displays you can hook your PC gaming rig to. Alternatively, users could tap into the Nvidia Shield features to stre

AMD’s new APUs combine upgraded Ryzen CPUs with Radeon RX Vega graphics

Based on a new Raven Ridge architecture, AMD’s new APUs combine an updated version of Ryzen processor with “discrete-class” Radeon RX Vega graphics. This entry-level APU also comes outfitted with 4 cores, but only 4 threads as well as just 8 compute units attached to its Radeon RX Vega GPU. Ultimately, the bigger story here is that the on-board discrete Radeon RX Vega graphics basically offer twice the graphical performance of Intel’s Coffee Lake SoC. Both the AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 2200G w

AMD Ryzen 3 Mobile brings quad-core processor power to budget laptops

AMD launched a pair of high-end mobile Ryzen processors last fall and now at CES 2018, it’s filling out its laptop APU family with a new pair of chips designed for affordable laptops and Chromebooks. The APU also comes outfitted with full-on Radeon RX Vega graphics powered by six compute units. Another step down, the dual-core Ryzen 3 2200U runs with 4 threads at standard 2.5GHz frequency that boosts up to 3.4GHz. Like the other APUs in the family, this one features Radeon RX Vega graphics, but

AMD details upcoming 12nm CPUs, Ryzen APUs, and 7nm Vega

Both 14nm and 12nm Ryzen parts will continue to be manufactured for now, and there will also be 2nd generation Threadripper parts that use the Zen+ architecture. Coming next month, AMD will roll out desktop Ryzen APUs, though interestingly AMD will initially have only Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 parts. Finally, AMD surprised me with the announcement of an upcoming 7nm Vega part for this year. AMD mentions new deep learning operations support for 7nm Vega, which could be something similar to Nvidia's Ten
