As you probably already know, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is releasing next Friday, and for long time fans of the original games, the package is a dream come true. Developer Vicarious Visions has taken care to keep everything about the games feeling like they did during their PS1 days and in speaking with Ars Technica, it’s harder than you might think.

As designer Dan Tanguay put it, “Almost everything was missing” when the team started working on the game. All of the files that Naughty Dog provided to the team contained the games’ 3D meshes, but as far as source code and reference materials, nada.

Producer Kara Massie said that the team spent a lot of the development time eyeballing and using video comparisons of the original games, as well as consulting a team of hardcore fans that made up the Q&A team. Online guides and Crash Bandicoot communities were also combed for information as well, so suffice it to say; Vicarious Visions has really done their homework.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy releases for PS4 on June 30th, 2017.
